A whitepaper is a document that helps readers understand an issue, solve a problem, or make a decision.

In blockchain technology

A whitepaper is prepared by a party prior to launching a new cryptocurrency or other blockchain technology.

A whitepaper's details often cover the majority of information that one needs to know about the technology a project aims to introduce. This includes commercial, technological and financial details.

Whitepapers often describe a project in language that can be understood by someone who is not an expert in the space.

Several variations on the colour theme exist:

  • The greenpaper is a proposal or consultative document rather than being authoritative or final.

Two others are much less well established:

  • A bluepaper sets out technical specifications of a technology or item of equipment.[1]
  • A yellowpaper is a document containing research that has not yet been formally accepted or published in an academic journal. It is synonymous to the more widely used term.
